What is “RD Service” / Registered Device (RD) for Biometric Devices? :

RD = Registered Device. It’s a service mandated by UIDAI for biometric (fingerprint / iris) devices to be registered and authorized before they can perform Aadhaar-based authentication or eKYC tasks.
Only biometric devices that are registered with UIDAI / authorized management servers via RD service can be used in production environments for secure Aadhaar authentication.
The RD service enables the device to be securely identified, authenticated, and allowed to operate in a controlled, trusted environment.
If the RD service validity expires, the device may fail to function for Aadhaar authentication (errors like “device not registered”, “cert verify failed”, etc.).
You often need to renew / recharge the RD service periodically (1 year,2 Year, 3 years, etc.).
